is musical trend, disregarding comercial pop, a cyclical deal? we can be sure that technological advances, which affect the whole industry in a great many ways, are moving distribution, production and promotion forward into unimagined territory, but,despite the technology, where are the musical innovators in each generation and what are they referencing? you could feasibly use statistics to acquire information on what type of music is gaining online momentum, in fact you could probably do this in a number of different ways, i assume, but the ability of a program or equation to judge the true intent of a piece of music is not something that exists - that is not to disregard the power of statistics and im certainly not saying i wouldn't happily befriend a computer that could truly understand the artistic merit of burial, but for now, i feel its a little soon - moreover, we must also take into consideration that once it may have been true that musicians would reference or rebel against the music that was taught to them and was available, creating two alternative inspiration possibilities, the amount of music available now may leave this argument completely moot. but enough of that, it seems like something to have a proper go at, here are a few sounds that i think may offer a whiff of the future; created by people of a range ages, from a number of different places and backgrounds but all sharing a common psychedelic tint and an eye for combining electronic and organic sound.every one of these records is worth buying, but physical therapy have kindly given you a free download. very opulent innit.

great free download from DIPLO and friends, HARLEM SHAKE was a highlight of the recent essential mix from RUSTIE. pretty much long live BAAUER. he doesn't seem to take himself seriously but there's great substance to his music too. its a great combination.

sun in tokyo inspires. the way hard light moves in this city, it seems, diverts the thought process a little leftwards and in me this energy has manifested itself in a rediscovery and a renewed appreciation of the work of flying lotus. undoubtably a coltrane (and a genius in his own right) the character of his work and his conceptual depth leave him with few equals. an individual to be adored - my subsequent discovery (via PITCHFORK) concerning his new album, due in june/july ( now october-ish) on the ever wonderful WARP records and titled UNTIL THE QUIET COMES, is very much an exciting prospect and listening to a live show of his from '11 and his wonderful demo album JULY HEAT i though i may as well commit my thoughts to code. below are links to said demos, the live set from SASQUATCH festival and a preview of what is to come....

its been a while since my last posting and i've been busy, maybe not in the conventionally constructive sense but nonetheless busy. i was offered the chance to go to tokyo about a month ago, which i took faster than round out a colt.45, and since arrivng i have experienced some of the most intriguing sounds, sights and tastes imaginable. tokyo is a city in perpetual movement, never pausing and constantly athirst for fresh creation and in consequence it is incredibly arresting, even unnerving at times. having said this coming from the great city of london its easy to note how similar the two metropoli in a number of ways, both cites offer constant sensory stimulation and complete cultural captivation however, the feeling one gets from the sheer scale and shape of tokyo is incomparable. over the last week or so i've had the pleasure of catching a number of great performers at some of tokyo's finest venues, highlights have included the legendary J-ROCC, TEETH, new APOLLO signing SUBMERSE and a host of fantastic japanese dj's and bands. here are some select photos from the east and some sounds, both japanese and other, to enjoy. featured are SUBMERSE's forthcoming track on R&S sublabel APOLLO, free downloads from japanese experimantal producer YUKI SATO, a new cut from portland innovator STEVIE SCHMIDT, DAISUKE TANABE's new live set and truly one of my favorite electronic artists, and RBMA graduate YOSI HORIWAKA
